Abstract

This review article delves into the multifaceted potential of Moringa oleifera, commonly known as the drumstick tree, in combating the prevalent mental health condition of depression, which affects millions worldwide. Depression, characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and disinterest, is exacerbated by oxidative stress and neurochemical imbalances in the central nervous system. While conventional antidepressants offer relief, they often come with side effects. Moringa oleifera emerges as a promising alternative, boasting a plethora of pharmacological actions, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and neuropharmacological effects. Its phytoconstituents, rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, contribute to its diverse therapeutic properties. Beyond mental health, Moringa oleifera demonstrates efficacy in various physiological systems, exhibiting hepatoprotective, gastroprotective, cardiovascular, anti-obesity, anti-asthmatic, hematological, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial activities. Moreover, its immunomodulatory effects enhance immune responses, while its wound-healing properties accelerate tissue regeneration. Notably, Moringa oleifera exerts miscellaneous effects, such as regulating sebum secretion, promoting lactation, and displaying local anesthetic properties. This comprehensive exploration underscores Moringa oleifera's potential as a natural antidepressant and its broader role in promoting holistic well-being, offering a promising avenue for future research and therapeutic applications in mental health and beyonds.
